The Story Behind our Name
When my son was just 18 months old, he was diagnosed with a chronic condition. The moment I heard the diagnosis, I felt completely overwhelmed and lost. Like so many other parents of chronically ill children, I didn’t know where to begin. Suddenly, my days were filled with managing endless appointments, lab work, and evaluations. Every day felt like a maze of phone calls to doctors, providers, and insurance companies, each conversation more frustrating than the last.
I carried a binder and a tablet filled with test results and medical evaluations everywhere I went, as if it were a lifeline. The emotional and physical toll was immense. What started as missed days at daycare turned into missed school days, which became missed workdays. The financial burden of every appointment, test, and hour spent driving was overwhelming.
A few years later, I found myself in the difficult position of being a member of the sandwich generation. I was a single mom caring for my child with a chronic illness while also becoming the primary caregiver for my mother, who was diagnosed with colon cancer. My mother had always been my rock, and now she needed me more than ever.
As someone who had worked in healthcare my entire life, I saw firsthand the strain that providers faced—overburdened by administrative tasks and understaffing. But now, I was experiencing that strain from both sides—caring for a child and an aging parent with complex medical needs. It was an indescribable pressure, and something had to change.
Through all these challenges, I found peace in one simple act: hugging my son. That connection, that love, gave me the strength to keep going, no matter how hard things got. After my mother lost her battle with cancer, I knew it was time for a change. Health Hug was born from that deep sense of love and connection. Because no parent or child should have to face this journey alone.
